Procurement & Brokerage of Electricity & Natural Gas.

Attention Telecom salespeople:

Don't forget to tell your clients about savings available to them on their Natural Gas and Electricity expenditures.
Leverage your relationship as a trusted adviser and don't leave $$ on the table.

Welcome to New Breed Energy

Specializing in procurement and brokerage of Electricity and Natural Gas.

New Breed Energy
is a subsidiary of New Breed Telecom; an established Telecommunications Master agency providing Voice, Data and Internet services from all the major carriers.

If you are located in a state with deregulated energy, you're probably overpaying for your electricity and natural gas.

With the advent of electricity and natural gas deregulation, customers are now enabled to choose which Company supplies their energy.

In this new deregulated and competitive marketplace, generation is separated from transmission and distribution.

This allows consumers to choose their energy supplier, while the delivery of the energy is still regulated and is the responsibility of the local utility company.

We represent a team of well established energy industry experts who leverage their expertise in today's energy markets to provide significant savings for our customers. We work on a no-cost basis and often find savings exceeding 30%

Time Warner Cable has launched its DOCSIS 3.0-based Wideband Internet tier in the Midlands area of South Carolina, including Columbia, Blythewood, Batesburg, Sumter and Orangeburg.

Wideband Internet, which has download speeds of up to 50 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5 Mbps, is available to both residential and Time Warner Cable Business Class customers in the above Midland areas The launch represents Time Warner Cable's first roll-out of Wideband Internet in South Carolina.

Time Warner Cable said it expects all of its other serviceable areas in South Carolina, including Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, to have Wideband Internet by this fall.

"As more members of the household simultaneously surf the Internet, download vacation photographs or watch live television through the TWCableTV app on their iPad, Wideband Internet provides all home network devices the fastest connection speeds in the area," said Charlene Keys, area vice president of operations for South Carolina.

During yesterday’s second-quarter earnings call, Time Warner Cable President and COO Rob Marcus said the cable operator had DOCSIS 3.0 deployed across 60 percent of its footprint and expects to have it fully rolled out next year.

In the second quarter, Time Warner Cable added 25,000 DOCSIS 3.0 subscribers, which more than doubled its previous total.

MALWARE

follow us on twitter:

MALWARE

Malware is known as malicious software and essentially means that code (scripts, active content, and other software) are downloaded and executed on your computer to cause major issues. These problems include, but are not limited to:

*  disruption of services,
*  gathering information that can lead to loss of privacy or exploitation,
*  gain unauthorized access to system resources, and other abusive behavior.

Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, most rootkits, and other malicious and unwanted software or program. (Wikipedia.com)

How do I get it?

Malware, spyware, and other junk software typically makes it onto a computer for a number of reasons:

* Downloading something you really shouldn’t have, from an untrustworthy source.

* Thought you were installing a “reputable” application but it actually bundles “optional” features that are actually malware.

* You’ve already managed to get yourself infected, and the malware installs even more malware.

Trojan horses
For a malicious program to accomplish its goals, it must be able to run without being shut down, or deleted by the user or administrator of the computer system on which it is running. This concealment is also how malware gets installed in the first place. Malware is often lurking behind a “reputable” source but disguised as something innocuous or desirable. This technique is known as the Trojan Horse.

Backdoors
Once a system has been compromised most malware softare will install a backdoor. This allows for other malware or harmful things to be easily installed in the future. This method is typically used by a malicious individual to gain secure remote access to a computer, while attempting to remain hidden from view.

All of these reasons and more make it harder to “hand remove” the malware. Even using all of those “cleaner” programs out there (that may actually install malware on your machine...) you may not get to the root of the issue. Also note that these are just a few ways to get a malware infected machine, there are always new ways to be aware of!

How do I avoid it?

The best method for avoiding malware is to have the correct protection! Most of us have a good Anti-virus program but that is like locking the front door but leaving a window open. These days most threats are actually web browser based and your Anti-virus probably doesn’t protect you!

Web Filtering products can protect your network from attacks through the web browser.  Email Perimeter Security in combination with Web Security provides additional layers of protection to combat Email and Internet threats.

Let New Breed show you how to Create your own

STIMULUS PACKAGE

by uncovering “Found  Money”  in Telecom

Looking to cut costs to reduce your monthly spend in today’s economy? Most of us are. Today, there is little choice left for most businesses but to find ways to tighten their corporate belt.

While Reduction In Force (RIF) is the most prevalent method that businesses use to immediately cut overhead, it is also the most aggressive, permanent, and least palatable.  While RIF is the ultimate quick fix, it comes with a heavy price. Workforce shortage ultimately results in a trickle-down effect throughout the work environment. Increased individual workload & poor company morale are inevitable.

We have a solution for you that will allow you to avoid some of the tough cost cutting decisions ahead.

  • Instead of having to lose staff & productivity, you will be able to easily find money within your existing environment.
Did you know that one of the top 3 annual business costs is telecom expense?

Salaries, healthcare, rent, and Telecom & IT comprise most company’s overall fixed/variable expenses. Unlike expensive equipment, Telecom services, if deployed properly, would not be calculated as a working capital expense, but viewed instead as a vehicle to create efficiencies and drive new revenues.

Locating the “Found Money”

New Breed identifies obvious high charges, as well as the hard to see fees and surcharges. After we reduce your overall expense, we will consult with you to help you leverage and take control of your Network/IT environment, enabling your IT staff to concentrate on other critical network areas.

NEW BREED’S auditing, and consulting solutions will not only save you money instantly, but will turn your network budget around from a capital expense into a revenue stream.

We have a 96% success rate in reducing our client’s overall telecom expense. Our average savings program results in a 18-28% expenditure decrease, Even if you had an “expert” review your phone bills recently, New Breed’s team of telecom professionals will find additional methods to further reduce your monthly costs.

Beyond spotting obvious phone costs such as incorrect local and long distance charges, our expertise allows us to perform a deep-dive into your network landscape to find additional inaccuracies and soft costs you hadn't ever considered.

Our goal is to review all aspects of your monthly telecom expenditure
There are no up-front fees associated with our offering. We are only compensated when we “find” you money.

Verizon Wireless Unveils Suite Of 4G LTE Smartphones, Tablets, A MiFi, Hotspot And Notebooks

follow us on Twitter......

The operator of the fastest, most advanced 4G network in the United States unveiled a suite of 10 consumer-oriented devices that will run on its 4G LTE network by the middle of this year.

At a news conference at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, Verizon Wireless announced a suite of 10 forthcoming 4G LTE devices – including smart-phones from HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; tablets from Motorola and Samsung; a MiFi from Novatel Wireless and a mobile hotspot from Samsung; and two notebooks from HP – which will transform the wireless experience and offer consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds. Verizon expects these consumer-oriented devices to be available by mid-2011, with some available as early as March 2011.

The company also announced it is expanding its 4G LTE network to an additional 140 markets by the end of this year. Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, said, “Today, we’re unveiling the next evolution of 4G LTE for consumers. During this three-year journey, from acquiring spectrum to launch, we not only transformed our network, but also our business by engaging in a strategy of collaboration and openness, while driving partnerships that will make 4G LTE successful across the globe. The result is true magic – the sum of a powerful network, applications, software systems and devices that bring 4G LTE to life.”

Marni Walden, vice president and chief marketing officer of Verizon Wireless, said, “For consumers, our 4G LTE network isn’t about simply doing things faster. It’s about doing things we couldn’t do before. In the consumer electronics arena, it’s not just about devices. It’s about those powerful devices with deeply integrated applications and how our 4G LTE network truly transforms the wireless experience with rich multimedia and real-time response intervals.”

Verizon Wireless also introduced new applications that are being fully integrated into the new smartphones and run seamlessly over the 4G LTE network. An upgraded version of Skype mobile takes advantage of video capabilities enabled by 4G LTE’s incredible speed, allowing users to see and hear friends and family when making or receiving Skype-to-Skype video calls. EA’s ROCK BAND leverages the high-speed, low-latency 4G LTE network to provide the next generation of multiplayer gaming. At launch, this will be the first time the game can be played with friends over the mobile network, which means consumers can rock out with their friends like never before with 20 favorite hits – while on the go.

Since its launch 32 days ago, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, laptop users experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Tony Melone, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Verizon, said, “We will aggressively continue launching 4G LTE markets over the next 36 months. We’ll cover two-thirds of the U.S. population in the next 18 months, and by the end of 2013 we’ll offer our 4G LTE network from coast to coast – everywhere that we offer 3G today. In order to get there, we’ll add more than 140 markets in 2011, including Detroit, Raleigh-Durham, Memphis, Milwaukee, Honolulu, Boise, Mobile, Little Rock, Sioux Falls and Salt Lake City.”

Verizon Wireless’ primary 4G LTE network vendors, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, are providing the underlying infrastructure for the 4G LTE network. Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including improved in-building penetration and a contiguous, nationwide network footprint.

Verizon Wireless is also working with rural companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon Wireless’ core 4G LTE equipment and premium 700MHz spectrum. Rural operators are leveraging Verizon Wireless’ scale for infrastructure while they keep their customers on the cutting edge of technology. Bluegrass Cellular is the first rural wireless provider to partner with Verizon Wireless, and to date, more than 200 organizations have expressed interest in collaborating with Verizon Wireless to bring 4G LTE to rural America.
Since 2007, when Verizon Wireless jump-started the global 4G LTE ecosystem with its selection of LTE for its 4G technology, the company has developed deep partnerships to spearhead a broad LTE ecosystem, including the LTE Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., and an LTE Applications Center, soon to open in the San Francisco area.

Melone concluded, “2011 will be a gang buster year, especially as we combine our growing 4G LTE network with our amazing lineup of 4G devices and applications that take advantage of high speed and low latency.”

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network already reaches more than one-third of all Americans. A list of initial 4G LTE markets to be covered by Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network in 2011 include:

  • Huntsville, Alabama

Verizon to launch LTE in 38 markets this year

Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ [1]) President and COO Lowell McAdam here at the 2010 CTIA Enterprise & Applications conference announced the carrier's planned launch markets for its forthcoming LTE service. Verizon will launch LTE this year in a total of 38 cities and more than 60 airports, from Seattle to Denver to Boston, covering 110 million POPs.

McAdam said the carrier will expand that figure to 200 million POPs by 2012 and more than 285 million by 2013.
[2]The numbers are beyond Verizon's initial expectations; the carrier has previously promised 25 to 30 markets and 100 million POPs by the end of this year.

McAdam provided a few extra details, stating that the network will support throughput in fully loaded scenario of 5-12 Mbps, and latency of 30 milliseconds. McAdam said the throughput speeds are 10 times faster than the carrier's 3G network, and the latency speeds are double those of the 3G network.

Further, McAdam also addressed the device question. Verizon critics, notably those from rival AT&T Mobility, have said LTE devices will not be available anytime soon.

"That's not the case," McAdam said. "Come see us at CES in January." He said Verizon will have half a dozen LTE smartphones and tablets available in the first half of next year.

However, McAdam did not provide any further details, including when specifically the service will launch this year and what it would cost.

Verizon Wireless launching 4G Network in 30 NFL cities

Verizon Wireless launching 4G Network in 30 NFL cities covering 100 million people in November.

On the initial roll out Verizon will supply a USB Data Card that will have data rates of 7-12MBps on a download and 3-5MBps on a upload.  VZW will have more devices coming out in the 1st Quarter of 2011.  Please see below; Why Verizon Wireless will have a huge advantage on AT&T, Sprint & T-mobile for years to come.

What makes Verizon Wireless best-suited to support a whole new breed of wireless devices?
The Verizon Wireless LTE network.

Deploying LTE

Verizon Wireless will be the first in the U.S. and among the first in the world to launch LTE, starting with 25 to 30 markets in 2010, covering approximately 100M people; and extending to cover our current 3G footprint in 2013.  AT&T will start rolling out their LTE network in Mid 2011.

Verizon Wireless plans on utilizing its nationwide swath of contiguous 700 MHz spectrum to deploy its LTE/4G network. This spectrum covers the entire lower 48 states plus Hawaii, and gives Verizon Wireless customers the nationwide bandwidth and coverage they need, when and where they need it

Verizon Wireless’ LTE network will co-exist and integrate with the current Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) RevA network. It will also support handover to existing mobile networks, thereby providing seamless coverage to Verizon Wireless subscribers from the time of its deployment. .

Advantages of Verizon Wireless LTE

The performance and capabilities of LTE will be unmatched in the marketplace, allowing customers to do things never before possible in a wireless environment. Consider some of the advantages that Verizon Wireless’ implementation of LTE will provide:

   HIGHER DATA RATES: With Verizon Wireless’ 10 + 10 MHz implementation, LTE will be supporting average data rates per user of 7-12 Mbps in the forward link, and 3-5 Mbps in the reverse link. The maximum and average LTE data rates are significantly greater in magnitude in the reverse and forward link correspondingly, than those supported by existing 3G technology. LTE will truly enable video application on the downlink as well as uplink – including but not limited to video-sharing, surveillance, conferencing and streaming in higher definition than is possible with existing 3G technology today.

   COVERAGE: Verizon Wireless’ deployment of LTE in the beachfront 700 MHz spectrum provides coverage and in-building penetration advantages over existing 3G technologies (and other 4G competitive implementations) deployed at higher frequency bands. This enhanced in-building coverage/penetration will make indoor applications even more powerful.

   BETTER MULTIPATH, MOBILITY AND POWER PERFORMANCE: The advanced radio characteristics of LTE address several issues that have traditionally crippled cellular wireless, including multipath and multiuser interference. LTE’s use of OFDMA and MIMO in the downlink transmission effectively eliminates intra-cell multiuser interference and minimizes inter-cell multiuser interference thereby maximizing performance. Similarly, the SC-FDMA uplink transmission allows for user equipment to transmit low power signals without the need for expensive power amplifiers. Improvement in battery power consumption in end-user devices (UEs) is a side-benefit of the coverage and multipath/power performance advantages offered by LTE.

   LATENCY: The user plane latency achieved in LTE is approximately 1/4th (one-fourth) corresponding latency in existing 3G technologies. This provides a direct service advantage for highly immersive and interactive application environments, such as multiplayer gaming and rich multimedia communications.

   SIMULTANEOUS USER SUPPORT: LTE provides the ability to perform two-dimensional resource scheduling (in time and frequency), allowing support of multiple users in a time slot; in contrast, existing 3G technology performs one-dimensional scheduling, which limits service to one user for each timeslot. This capability of LTE results in a much better always-on experience, and also enables the proliferation of embedded wireless applications/systems.

   SECURITY: LTE provides enhanced security through the implementation of UICC Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) and the associated robust and non-invasive key storage and symmetric key authentication using 128-bit private keys. LTE additionally incorporates strong mutual authentication, user identity confidentiality, integrity protection of all signaling messages between UE and Mobility Management Entity (MME) and optional multi-level bearer data encryption.

   SIMPLIFIED WORLDWIDE ROAMING: Verizon Wireless’ chosen migration path to LTE, the widely adopted next-generation 3GPP standard, will provide greater opportunities for seamless international roaming and for global device economies of scale as well.

4G Wireless Evolution - Verizon Wireless to Launch 4G Plans Soon

By Amy Tierney

Watch out AT&T (News - Alert). Verizon Wireless is planning to make some big changes to its network by introducing a fourth generation mobile broadband network.

The big change, in this case, is the need for speed.

The company announced plans to develop a 4G network in November 2007. And already, tests for the new 4G network are going well, according to news reports. The 4G network reportedly is five times faster than what customers currently experience on the 3G network.

“We are on track to deliver an outstanding wireless data experience to customers in 25 to 30 markets covering roughly 100 million people by year’s end,” Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless Chief Technology Officer Tony Melone told ZDNet. “As device makers, manufacturers and others around the world begin to introduce newer and faster products to take advantage of these incredible new speeds, Verizon Wireless will be positioned to offer our customers new and exciting.”

Verizon has been testing LTE (News - Alert) in Boston and Seattle since last year. Some of the applications tested on the new network include Web browsing, VoIP calls, video streaming, and file downloads and uploads, ZDNet reported.

Engineers said they have reported average download speeds of 5 Mbps to 12 Mbps, with peaks up to 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps, with peaks of 25 Mbps up, the blog said. That’s a big difference when compared to average 3G speeds of 1.5 Mbps and 500 Kbps, it said.

J.D. Power Study: Verizon Wireless Highest for Call Quality in the New York Metro Region

Press Release Source: Verizon Wireless On Thursday February 18, 2010, 10:53 am EST
ORANGEBURG, N.Y., Feb. 18 /PR Newswire;

Verizon Wireless ranked highest among wireless providers in the New York Metro Region in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Wireless Call Quality Performance Study(SM), Volume 1, issued today.

The J.D. Power and Associates study measures call quality among the major U.S. wireless service providers in six regions based on factors that impact overall carrier performance. Â Verizon Wireless scored consistently better than the industry average in key categories and ranked highest in five regions, including the New York Metro Region.

Verizon Wireless was also recognized for highest call quality in the New York Metro Region in the previous J.D. Power and Associates Call Quality Performance Study, which was issued in August 2009.

"Customers are using our network not only to talk, but for texting, e-mailing, downloading music, visiting Web sites and sharing pictures and videos," said Pat Devlin, president of Verizon Wireless' NY Metro Region. "It is important for us to not only meet the current needs of our customers, but to also stay ahead of their growing and ever-changing demand, which is why we continually invest in and vigorously test our network, to make sure we are providing a service they can rely on today and in the future."

More than 24,300 wireless phone subscribers were surveyed between July and December 2009 about their experience with dropped calls, static/interference, failed connection on the first try, voice distortion, echoes, no immediate voice mail notification and no immediate text message notification.

Verizon Wireless regularly invests in its wireless network to provide customers with the reliable, high-quality service they expect from the company. Verizon Wireless' ongoing network investment now totals more than $3.2 billion in the New York Metro Region and more than $55 billion nationally over the past ten years
.
Verizon Wireless has the largest and most reliable wireless 3G network coverage area in the United States. The company's 3G data network provides customers in more locations than any other wireless carrier the ability to browse the web quickly with fast page loading times, quickly download and play music, watch streaming video, send e-mails with attachments, download and play 3D games, video conference with contacts and rapidly share files.

Verizon Wireless' "most reliable wireless network" claim is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women who inspired the company's national advertising campaign. These engineers conduct more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on the Verizon Wireless network and other national wireless carriers' networks while traveling almost 1 million miles across the nation

Verizon strikes a deal with Skype

Verizon Wireless struck a partnership with Skype Ltd. to offer the free Internet-calling service on some of its smart phones, the latest sign the biggest U.S. carrier is willing to sacrifice voice revenue to lure customers willing to pay for data services.

The deal, announced at a wireless-industry conference Tuesday, comes a few weeks after Verizon Wireless and rival AT&T Inc. dropped prices for their unlimited calling plans by $30 but tacked on requirements for data services for smart-phone users.

Most telecommunications companies have been against allowing Internet calls to run across their cellular networks, because a Skype call would use a customer's unlimited data plan rather than voice minutes.

"Where we see revenue growing is from data services, not voice services," said John Stratton, chief marketing officer of Verizon Wireless, adding that he doesn't view cannibalization of voice revenue as a "huge problem."

Verizon Wireless, which has 91 million subscribers and is jointly owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, hopes the Skype application will spur adoption of smart phones with pricier voice and data-service plans, Mr. Stratton said.

The Skype app, which will launch in late March, will be made available to nine smart phones, including Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices and phones running Google Inc.'s Android software.

While Skype users will be able to use the program to make free calls, they will still need to subscribe to a Verizon voice and data plan. The carrier's cheapest monthly voice plan now costs $40 for 450 minutes, and a $30 data plan is required with any smart phone.
Skype has had a rocky relationship with carriers in the past. A similar mobile app for Apple Inc.'s iPhone, for example, can run only on a Wi-Fi connection and isn't allowed on AT&T's cellular network.

An AT&T spokesman played down Verizon's announcement with Skype, saying it does allow customers to download Internet-calling programs and run them on its cellular network. The spokesman said that AT&T had no objections to Skype's app and that Apple had rejected the feature, which drew the eye of the Federal Communications Commission.

Last year, European operators such as Deutsche Telekom AG wanted to prevent their customers from using Internet-calling programs on their smart phones, but the ban was later lifted.
"We're seeing a real change in attitude with carriers around the world," said Josh Silverman, chief executive of Skype, which is based in Luxembourg and owned by a group of investors including Silver Lake, eBay Inc. and Skype's co-founders.

One concern is whether a carrier will be able to handle the increased traffic from such a program. Verizon Wireless insists the program won't hurt the quality of its network.
"We will do everything to prevent that from happening," Mr. Stratton said. The program was jointly developed by the carrier and Skype to optimize the delivery of the voice traffic, he said. The companies' joint effort would be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the U.S., he added.
Neither company provided specific financial details on the deal, but Mr. Silverman said Skype would make money from the partnership.

While calls to other Skype users are free, calls between a Skype user and a regular phone cost as little as two cents a minute, or $3 a month. Skype will likely share part of its revenue with Verizon Wireless.

CLOUD COMPUTING PRIMER

Cloud computing

Wikipedia defines cloud computing as “Internet based development and use of computer technology whereby dynamically scalable virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet.”  Basically, this definition means that the services residing in the cloud are based on scalable, on demand architectures that are housed in a data center. The service itself is delivered over the Internet.

Just about any web site could be considered a cloud computing service according to this definition.  However, when it comes to what is actually meant by cloud computing, the implication is that Software as a Service (SaaS) is part of the equation.

SaaS is a type of software that is available on demand, often directly from an application service provider.  Probably the most recognizable SaaS application is Salesforce.com, a customer relationship management (CRM) application used by many businesses. Under Salesforce.com's SaaS model, users connect to Saleforce.com’s web-based system and purchase only the amount of licenses required for their users. Licenses aren’t priced "per computer". Salesforce.com SaaS runs "in the cloud" meaning that it relies on the overall infrastructure that is called cloud computing.

Skype and BitTorrent are sometimes considered successful cloud computing architectures due to their peer-to-peer and scalable natures.  These two services are inherently scalable based simply on their basic design.

How does Cloud Computing work?
It's important to understand that the purpose of cloud computing is to deliver software and services to end users. There's no single architecture that defines cloud computing. Skype and BitTorrent are considered cloud computing services & these services are completely decentralized. However, other services, like Salesforce.com, rely on servers colocated in data centers to operate. As more users are added to the service, Salesforce.com adds capacity to handle the increased load. Many companies, such as; Amazon, Google & Microsoft are building out huge data centers specifically to provide cloud computing services.

The SaaS provider doesn’t have to have a massive Internet-facing data center themselves. They can rely on the services of one of the cloud computing infrastructure providers and keep their focus on developing the best software for their customers.

The customer, simply connects to the infrastructure put into place or used by the SaaS provider. The provider may build out their own infrastructure or partner with someone else. By sharing infrastructure costs among many customers, rather than having each customer build their own infrastructure, cloud computing can keep overall hardware costs lower.

What are the Benefits?
  • There's no need for an in-house IT staff to manage the services or infrastructure. If you’re utilizing services delivered over the Internet, there are no local applications or servers for you to worry about.
  • With cloud services, typically you require only a computer and an Internet connection, so there's no need to build out any infrastructure. If the applications you’re using are housed in data centers on the Internet, there’s no need for you to own and maintain local servers. Data centers have redundant power, connectivity and overall better security than you could ever provide in-house.
  • Licensing is typically less expensive  For the most part you can save money on licensing with cloud computing-based services. Not always - but usually this is the case.
Some things to consider:
  • Reliance on Vendor. There's always the danger that your SaaS and application vendor could go out of business. If your entire business is based these apps, you must consider the implications. What will you do? Is there an alternative plan? Is there any plan at all?   Consider this issue very carefully when making these decisions and when selecting a vendor. Be sure you know how your data can be accessed by your service provider.
  • Security of your Data. Since all your data, some of it sensitive, is housed in someone elses facility, you must be certain of the vendor's security practices and protocols. Do your due diligence and investigate their security history as well.
For many businesses, especially for those with little or no budget for an IT staff, cloud computing and SaaS can be a tremendous help. They allow you to do what you do best: running your business. It relieves you of the worry and hassle of having to deal with complex IT infrastructure issues.

Internet Explorer - Time to write it off?

It's hard to believe it, but IE is still plagued with security vulnerabilities.  It affects all of Microsoft's operating systems from NT through Windows 7 as well as every version of IE, including IE 8. This information comes right on the heels of yet another patch from Microsoft who advised that the browser was now safe. But, we have learned that Internet Explorer is still far from safe.

THE HACK:
An attacker lures a victim into clicking on a malicious URL. Then, by manipulating 4 or 5 features in IE, the hacker forces the browser to process files that are not pure HTML on the computer

Jorge Luis Alvarez Medina, a security consultant at Core Security Technologies, will be explaining at the Washington Black Hat conference next month why Microsoft's IE is at still risk to not just one serious hole but rather a whole set of minor vulnerabilities that can be linked together to exploit remote access to your data .

The problem was actually discovered  two years ago but has persisted despite several attempts by Microsoft to fix it. Since the issue involves features rather than vulnerabilities, it may be more difficult for Microsoft to ever permanently fix, Medina said. "Some of those features are kind of impossible to fix,"

Microsoft has not  commented on the matter, But the answer is quite simple: Use Firefox, or Chrome or pretty much anything other than Internet Explorer right now. Especially when, according to respected British journalist Jack Schofield of The Guardian, Microsoft apparently knew about this IE vulnerability it just patched back in September 2009.

Microsoft will next release patches on Feb. 9.

Have Plans Ready To Cope With Unexpected Disasters

by; Morey Stettner
You plan for risk. But do you plan for extreme risk?

Analyzing business risk typically involves identifying vulnerabilities, plugging security holes and ensuring the enterprise can continue to run amid a disruption. Yet some disruptions blossom into full-blown disasters.

In the last decade, entrepreneurs have faced everything from a terrorist attack on U.S. soil to Hurricane Katrina to a global economic crisis. Leaders of companies that survived these shocks may not have predicted such events, but they planned for high-level emergencies.

Yet just as many adults avoid shopping for life insurance rather than confront their death and its consequences on their family's finances, entrepreneurs may prefer not to spend time dreaming up big disasters and planning how their company would respond. That's a mistake, warns Howard Kunreuther, a professor of decision sciences and public policy at University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Planning for severe emergencies can actually save a business. It's precisely these types of low-probability but high-consequence events that do the most damage.

"It's not that anyone thinks these catastrophic events can't or won't happen," said Kunreuther, co-author of "Learning From Catastrophes." "They just think, 'These things won't happen on my watch.'"

Entrepreneurs tend to concentrate on short-term challenges. They may spend most of their time putting out fires or planning for three or six months in the future. And given their optimistic nature, business builders tend to underpredict the next potential crisis.

It's tempting to adopt the attitude, "If there's a low-enough probability of some massive natural or man-made disaster occurring, then I don't need to plan for it." This explains why some executives may be willing to prepare for more routine problems such as fires or spring floods while neglecting to plan for less-common but higher-magnitude disasters.

You can avoid this trap by analyzing worst-case scenarios with your employees, Kunreuther says. Hold a brainstorming meeting where you ask your team to identify what can happen at a local and national level that would seriously affect the firm's ability to function.

"Gather everyone to help you figure out mechanisms you can apply to think outside the box and prepare for catastrophe," Kunreuther said. Rather than just hire a consultant to draft a disaster recovery plan and then forget about it, stage drills with employees to practice emergency response.

At www.ready.gov, you can obtain free business-preparedness resources and participate in the "Ready Business" mentoring initiative that includes guides on how to take practical, low-cost steps to protect your business. You can also review worksheets on how to protect inventory, improve data security and shop for proper insurance coverage.

Who invented the Internet?

Question:
Who invented the Internet
?

Answer:
A single person did not create the Internet that we know and use today. Below is a listing of several different people who've helped contribute and develop the Internet.

The idea
The initial idea is credited as being Leonard Kleinrock's after he published his first paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" on May 31, 1961.

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider becomes the first Director of IPTO and gave his vision of a galactic network. In addition to the ideas from Licklider and Kleinrock, Robert Taylor helped create the idea of the network, which later became ARPANET.

Initial creation
The Internet as we know it today first started being developed in the late 1960's.

In the summer of 1968 the Network Working Group (NWG) held its first meeting chaired by Elmer Shapiro with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) with attendees: Steve Carr, Steve Crocker, Jeff Rulifson, and Ron Stoughton. In the meeting the group discussed solving issues related to getting hosts to communicate with each other.

In December 1968 Elmer Shapiro with SRI released a report "A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters." Based on this work and earlier work done by Paul Baran, Thomas Marill and others; Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler helped to create the final version of the Interface Message Processor (IMP) specifications. Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub network.

Introduction of the Internet to the general public

UCLA puts out a press release introducing the public to the Internet on July 3, 1969.

First network equipment
August 29, 1969 the first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called "IMP", which is short for (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA and on September 2, 1969 the first data moves from UCLA host to the switch.

The first distributed message
On Friday October 29, 1969 the first Internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard KleinRock's laboratory at UCLA, after the second piece of network equipment was installed at SLI. This connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made but is also considered to be the first Internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was "LO", which was an attempt at "LOGIN" by Charley S. Kline to log into the SLI computer from UCLA. However, the message was unable to be completed because the SLI system crashed. Shortly after the crash the issue was resolved and he was able to log into the computer.

E-mail is developed
RayTomlinson introduces network e-mail in 1972, the first messaging system to send messages across a network to other users.

TCP is developed
Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn design TCP during 1973 and later publish it with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in December of 1974 in RFC 675.

Ethernet is conceived

Bob Metcalfe develops Ethernet idea in 1973.

TCP/IP is created

In 1978 TCP splits into TCP/IP driven by Danny Cohen, David Reed, and John Shoch to support real-time traffic. This allows the creation of UDP. TCP/IP is later standardized into ARPANET in 1983 and is still the primary protocol used for the Internet.

DNS is introduced
Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel introduce DNS in 1984.

HTML
In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML, which makes a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the Internet today.

WWW
Tim Berners-Lee introduces WWW to the public on August 6, 1991.

Internet experiences large growth

In 1993 the Internet experienced one of its largest growths and today is accessible and used by people everywhere in the world. Today over 1 billion videos are view on YOUTUBE.

IP Addresses, Host names and DHCP explained

What is an IP address?
Every device that is connected to the public Internet is assigned a unique number called an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a 'dotted-quad') and look something like; 127.0.0.1.

Since these numbers are normally assigned to internet service providers within region-based blocks, an IP address can be used to identify the
user's general location; the region or country from which a computer is connecting to the Internet.  Because the numbers are difficult to deal with, an IP address may also be assigned to a Host name, which is usually easier to remember. You can look up a hostname to find an  IP addresses, and vice-versa.

What is a Hostname?
A name is a label that is used to distinguish one thing from another. A person’s name, for instance, comprises a set of alphabetic characters that allows a person to be individually addressed. Computers are also named to differentiate one machine from another and to permit activities like network communication.

Computers have always needed unique addresses to communicate with each other. With the advent of the Internet, the requirements to enable computers to communicate with each other on a network included the concept of the host-name. The hostname began as a simple string of alphanumeric characters and has evolved to its current definition, where hostname means a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that identifies every computer hooked up to the Internet via the Domain Name Service (DNS) naming hierarchy.

The true “name” a computer needs in order to communicate on a network is a set of numbers. The original computers connected to the Internet used small integers as the host number. For TCP/IP, the main protocol used by the Internet, each computer has a network IP address that follows a specific set of rules to assure its uniqueness and validity.

At one time ISPs issued one IP address to each user, called a "static" IP addresses. Because there is a limited number of IP addresses and with increased internet usage ISPs now issue IP addresses in a dynamic fashion out of a pool of IP addresses (Using DHCP). These are referred to as dynamic IP addresses. This also limits the ability of the user to host websites, mail servers, ftp servers, etc.

DHCP
The Internet is a vast source of information that is continuously updated and accessed via computers and other devices. For a device (also referred to as a host) to connect to the Internet, it is necessary that among other configurations, it must have an Internet Protocol (IP) address. The IP address is the computer’s address on the Internet. A good comparison of an IP address would be your telephone number, which is an identifier for people to communicate with you. Configuring a computer to connect to the Internet (until the late 80s) was a manual process. The protocol Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) was the first Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network configuration tool used to prevent the need to manually assign IP addresses by automating the process.

While the introduction of the BOOTP network protocol was a great for network administrators who had to manage large numbers of computers on a network, it was just the first attempt. A new and improved TCP/IP network protocol soon followed. This protocol is called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP wasn't designed as a replacement for BOOTP, but rather as an extension of its functionality.

How DHCP Works
As its name indicates, DHCP provides dynamic IP address assignment. This means that instead of having to rely on a specific IP address, a computer will be assigned one that is available from a subnet or “pool”  assigned to the network. DHCP also extends BOOTP functionality to provide IP addresses that expire. When DHCP assigns an IP address, it actually leases the identifier to the host computer for a specific amount of time. The default lease is five days.

In basic terms, the DHCP lease process works as follows:
   1. A network device attempts to connect to the Internet.
   2. The network requests an IP address.
   3. The DHCP server allocates (leases) the network device an IP address, which is forwarded to the    network by a router.
   4. DHCP updates the appropriate network servers with the IP address & other configuration information.
   5. The network device accepts the IP address.
   6. The IP address lease expires.
   7. DHCP either reallocates the IP address or leases one that is available.
   8. The network device is no longer connected to the Internet.
   9. The IP address becomes an available address in the network pool of IP addresses.

To set up DHCP;
...you need a DHCP-supported client, a router and a DHCP server. The client is a computer or other device on a network that requires an IP address. The router functions as a forwarding (or routing) agent of IP address requests from the DHCP server. The DHCP server is key to the entire operation. It is responsible for allocating, leasing, reallocating, and renewing IP addresses. Windows and Linux both support DHCP software.

Inbound links

Relevant Link Backs

One of the most important factors today in determining  rankings on the Search engines is the number and the quality of other sites that link to your site. Search engines count these links to evaluate  your website, and use the count to determine a ranking compared to other sites in your target market. To boost your site’s rankings, you need sites that are relevant to your content to link back to you. Their relevance to your topic is important because a related site's choice to link to your site increases your site’s credibility for your target product or services.

Highly Ranked Link Backs
Because sites that link to you affect your site’s ranking, it’s desirable to get sites that are not only relevant, but also already highly ranked. Their credibility has a positive effect on your site's ranking

 Anchor Text Link Backs
While almost any relevant or authoritative links back to your website are good, it will improve your site’s ranking much more if the text of those links contains keywords that are relevant to your site’s products or subject matter. So, for example, don’t just ask for links using your domain name or "contact us" as the "anchor text". Instead, you should ask your link exchange partners to link to your site using text like "Save big bucks on T3 services ", or "Atlanta car accident lawyer". These kind of keyword-loaded anchor text links are advantageous because the search engines basically give you "extra credit" by counting both the link itself and that link’s confirmation of your website’s importance for the keyword topics it contains.

SEO Design

No Flash!
Using Flash software to introduce your site doesn't help at all, and in fact can have an adverse effect on the Search Engines ability to read  or index your site. They may look fancy but search engines prefer plain text today and can't read Flash.

Menus in Text
Don’t hide your navigational  links in images. Search engines cannot read graphics as well as they can read text. Your navigational menu is critical for search engine spiders to read, both because the menu’s entries demonstrate the hierarchy of your website, and because the keywords contained in menu links tell the search engine what you think is important on each page.

Keywords in Image "ALT" and "Title" Tags
Search engine crawlers cannot read graphics. You can increase the SEO impact of images on your pages by ensuring that you title and tag each of them properly. This means renaming JPEG’s and other non-text files with new names that include keywords. So, a picture of a telephone shouldn't be "h4469b.jpg" rather: "telephone.jpg" if you want search engine ranking benefits related to "telephone" keywords. The ALT tags and TITLE tags associated with each image are also good places to insert keywords that can be even more specific than the file name example stated above.

SEO Keyword Advice

Understanding Keywords
To rank highly in the search engine results you need to pick the right key words and phrases  to promote your site. You don’t want the keywords to be so broad (e.g. "boats", "pants", "consulting") that your site is lost amongst hundreds of thousands of competitors. Don't target keywords that are so specific or narrow that there are very few searches for those terms. You can use free online research tools like Google’s Keyword Tool to help you find the right keywords. Google’s Traffic Estimator Sandbox helps to find  keywords that get a lot of demand.

The key to finding your best keywords is to think like your customer. This means avoiding  buzzwords or lingo. Use simple, "natural language" instead.
For example; target "warm socks" instead of "thermal hosiery".

Meta Tags
While they are not as important to search engine ranking calculations as they used to be, the "meta tags" hidden in each web page’s HTML code should be tweaked to maximize their potential impact. This means including your keywords so that they appear in the "title", "description", and "keywords" meta tag fields. This is easily done in most web page publishing tools or content management systems  Most search engines reference these fields to identify what keywords you see as most representative of your page’s content.

Headline Placements
The visible elements of your web pages’ headlines, links, and text should all be reviewed for keyword inclusion also. The search engines give extra weight to any words that are included in the titles of each page and section, and wherever text is bolded, highlighted, or linked. The logic here is that if you are emphasizing those words visually,  those words are probably key to your site’s content.

Keywords in Your URL
Use your keywords in as many other places as possible. If you are able to use them in your website’s URL, it can help your ranking.

Page File Names
You can further reinforce your keywords by using them in your page titles and file names. URLs for your popular pages would look like this: www.yourbrandnamekeyword.com/keyword-keyword.html

Avoid
Keyword Stuffing
This means that you shouldn’t overdo keyword insertion -- search engines are wary of sites that do this. They prefer your text copy to appear like normal conversational or sales copy. strive for a keyword "density" of less than 15%. basically, for every 100 words of copy on the page, you don’t want to have more than 15 of them as keywords. Some SEO experts recommend only 3-5%.
